Press Release – From Pakistan New Zealand Business Council (PNBC)
Pakistan New Zealand Business Council (PNBC) notes the recent decision of the New Zealand High Court regarding the use of the term “basmati” in the New Zealand market. The ruling confirms that the designation remains open for use by all legitimate producers and exporters, consistent with its long-standing recognition across multiple regions.
New Zealand’s open, competitive and diverse marketplace allows major international rice exporters to operate side by side. This environment delivers choice and value for consumers, retailers and food service businesses. The Court’s decision supports this framework by ensuring continued fairness, clarity and consistency in market practice.
The Pakistan New Zealand Business Council remains committed to supporting the growth of Pakistan’s rice export sector through collaboration with producers, distributors and New Zealand partners. Earlier this year, the Council hosted a trade delegation focused on strengthening supply routes and facilitating market engagement for premium rice varieties. These discussions will continue as part of our broader commitment to fostering mutually beneficial trade between Pakistan and New Zealand.
We acknowledge the New Zealand judicial system for its balanced review of the matter and for upholding principles that support transparency and open competition.
The Pakistan New Zealand Business Council will continue working proactively with government agencies, industry stakeholders and exporters to reinforce trade objectives and ensure a resilient, reliable basmati supply chain for New Zealand.
