UN Security Council Resolutions on Jammu & Kashmir

The United Nations has been seized of the Jammu & Kashmir dispute ever since the issue was taken there by India in 1948. Over the years at least 11 resolutions were adopted by UN Security Council*. The Security Council also appointed a UN Commission for India and Pakistan (UNCIP) to investigate and mediate the India-Pakistan dispute over the future of the state of Jammu and Kashmir**. The UN Commission adopted resolutions at meetings of 13 August 1948 and 5 January 1949. The resolutions adopted by the UN Security Council as well as UN Commission for India and Pakistan (UNCIP) embodied the principle of right of self-determination to people of Jammu and Kashmir.

Resolution of 21 April 1948 [S/726] No. 47 (1948) “… question of the accession of Jammu and Kashmir to India or Pakistan should be decided through the democratic method of a free and impartial plebiscite…” http://unscr.com/en/resolutions/47

United Nations “Resolution adopted by UNCIP on 13 August 1948 (Document No. 1100, para. 75, dt 9th November 1948)” “…Pakistan and India reaffirm their wish that future status of the state of Jammu and Kashmir shall be determined in accordance with will of the people…”

United Nations “Resolution adopted by UNCIP on 5 January 1949 (Document No. 5/1196, para. 15, dt 10 January 1949)” “…The question of accession of Jammu and Kashmir… will be decided through the democratic method of a free and impartial plebiscite…”

Resolution of 30 March 1951 [S/2017/Rev.1] No. 91 (1951) “…Reminding the governments and authorities concerned of the principle embodied in its resolutions of 47 (1948), 51 (1948), 80 (1950) and UNCIP resolutions of 13 August 1948 and 5 January 1949, that the final disposition of the state…will be made in accordance with the will of the people expressed through the democratic method of a free and impartial plebiscite conducted under the auspices of the UN…” http://unscr.com/en/resolutions/91

Resolution of 23 December 1952 [S/2883] No. 98 (1952) “…recalling the provisions of UNCIP resolutions of 13 August 1948 and 5 January 1949… provided that question of accession…would be decided through the democratic method…conducted under the auspices of the UN…” http://unscr.com/en/resolutions/98
