Mr. Shahid Khaqan Abbasi was nominated as Prime Minister of Pakistan by the Pakistan Muslim League – Nawaz, after the Supreme Court disqualified Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on 28 July 2017. He was at that time serving as Minister for Petroleum in the Cabinet.

Mr. Shahid Khaqan Abbasi is an Electrical Engineer. He has a 29 year experience of mainstream politics. He holds a Master’s degree from George Washington University, and Bachelor’s degree from the University of California, Los Angeles. He completed his early education in Karachi and Murree.

Mr. Abbasi entered politics in 1988 after the death of his father, Mr. Khaqan Abbasi, an Air Commodore in the Pakistan Airforce and later Minister in the Cabinet of President Zia ul Haq.

Mr. Abbasi has been elected six times as Member of the National Assembly of Pakistan from Rawalpindi District, from 1988 till 2013.

Earlier, he held other important positions, including Parliamentary Secretary for Defence in 1990, Chairman of National Assembly’s Standing Committee on Defence in 1993, and Chairman of the Pakistan International Airlines from 1997 to 1999. He also briefly held positions of Commerce Minister and Defence Production Minister in the Government of Pakistan.
